That dual function is what makes PVA a preferred choice for leading water soluble film manufacturers worldwide. According to the American Cleaning Institute detergent grade PVA is specifically designed to dissolve fully in water and biodegrade under standard wastewater treatment conditions.
However, PVA has one well documented vulnerability: it is highly hygroscopic. That means it actively pulls moisture from the surrounding air.
Key fact: In high humidity environments, PVA begins absorbing airborne moisture, even before the pod enters the dishwasher. This premature absorption triggers the exact dissolving process the film was designed to prevent.
